Father’s Day 2020 – a very different occasion

Father's Day, the official calendar date to honour our wonderful dads and celebrate fatherhood, is fast approaching – this year it happens on Sunday 21st June 2020.

Father’s Day has been around since the early 19th century when Sonora Dodd, the daughter of a Civil war veteran, pushed to have Fathers represented with a day the same way mothers had been honoured.

Sonora and her five siblings were cared for by their father after the death of their mother. Since then the holiday has continued to grow with gifts and outings each year in June set to honour a father’s role in their children’s lives.

There’s no escaping the fact that Father’s Day will be very different this year. Research from notonthehighstreet finding that four in ten Brits (41%) say lockdown is or was the longest they have ever gone without seeing their parents. Nearly half of Brits (45%) have gone over 50 days without seeing them.

So, will this mean sons and daughters will become more generous with their Father’s Day spend this year? Will we see the gap between spending on this occasion and Mother’s Day close (it’s estimated that across the globe we spend twice as much on Mother’s Day than Father’s Day)?

Signs are that this could be a good year for dads. According to a survey of over 8,000 adults conducted by the National Retail Federation (NRF) in the US, three quarters (75%) of consumers plan to celebrate Father’s Day 2020. That’s pretty much in line with previous years, the figures show. However, what is different is that, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, 58 percent said they are likely to celebrate Father’s Day 2020 virtually.

Maybe because of the virtual nature of this year’s Father’s Day – another big change predicted by the research is a marked increase in average spend. The NRF research suggests Americans will spend an average of $148 on gifts in 2020, that’s $10 more than a year earlier and large increase from the $90 the same research came up with in 2009.

However generous we are with gifts for fathers this year is anybody’s guess, but what we do know is that, during the coronavirus outbreak, the best Father’s Day gifts should be personal and priceless, in every sense of the word.
