    Why do we send flowers on International Women's Day?

    The answer dates back to December 1911, when poet James Oppenheim had a piece of work published in The American Magazine, which contained the slogan "Bread and Roses". The slogan soon became synonymous with an appeal for fair wages and dignified conditions, following a 1912 textile strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The strike unified female immigrant workers who carried signs saying, "We want bread, but we want roses too". The female workers won overtime pay, increased salaries and weren't penalised for striking, and ever since women around the world have been receiving gorgeous flowers on this special day.
