Why shopping locally this Christmas really matters

By Austin Clark 30th November 2025

Christmas is a time for giving, but it's also a chance to think about where our gifts come from. Across the UK, small businesses are the heart of our high streets and communities, and new research shows that shopping local can make a big difference to their future.

According to the findings of our research, for every £10 spent with a local business, almost £4 stays within the community. That means money spent with local florists, shops and cafés helps to support local jobs, services and suppliers — the things that make our neighbourhoods feel alive.

Four out of five shoppers say they plan to buy at least some of their Christmas gifts locally this year. More than half say they do so because they understand how much it means to small businesses, and almost half say shopping locally makes them feel happier. Local businesses, they believe, make their areas more vibrant, friendly and enjoyable places to live.

Yet despite that enthusiasm, three in five people still worry that small independent businesses may not survive unless their communities continue to support them.

That's why Direct2Florist is encouraging everyone to keep things local this Christmas. When you order flowers using Direct2Florist's platform, your order goes straight to an independent florist in your chosen area — not a central warehouse. Your money stays local, your flowers are hand-made by a skilled florist, and your gift helps a small business continue to thrive.

Simon Stirling, Founder and Managing Director of Direct2Florist, said:
"For our florists, every order means more than just a sale. It's a sign that their community values them, and that their work makes a difference. Choosing local is a small act that has a big impact, especially at Christmas."

So this year, when you're ticking off your gift list, think local. Every bouquet, every small purchase, every pound spent nearby helps keep your community blooming. Find your local florist and make this Christmas one to remember — for you, your loved ones, and the people behind your high street.
