About & History:

Heylis Cottage Gifts is owned and run by myself, Sue Lister. I started business as a Florist way back in 1986 in a tiny kiosk, in the heart of Heybridge, just outside Maldon in Essex. The name Heylis comes from the 'Hey' in Heybridge and 'Lis' in my surname Lister. Back then the business was known as "Heylis Florist" the "Cottage" was added in 1991 when I moved the business and my home to the pretty grade II listed cottage in Hatfield Peverel. The cottage itself is approximately 350 years old, with a wealth of charm and character. I started my career in floristry as a Saturday girl, when I was just 15 years old. After leaving school I worked in various florists in Maldon, Colchester and Witham. I studied floristry at Otley College in Suffolk, where I achieved excellent results and was awarded a prize for my 'high standard of work'. That high standard is reflected in my work today.

Using a local florist was important to us for this purchase. Paying a local florist would have been problematic since we wanted a florist local to the recipient, not to us. The quick and accurate confirmation of the order, then the delivery were reassuring to me as I thought to some extent that I was sending messages and flowers into the void. The florist did an excellent job with the flowers too.
